Who We Are

Founded in 2006, Red Thread Charities (RTC) is
a Minnesota non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide training to orphanage staff and facilitate medical and developmental care for children so that they can reach their full potential. In light of its mission, RTC sends a team of physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and special education teachers to China every year. The team not only provides for the immediate health care needs of orphaned children and training for their caretakers, but it also establishes working relationships with local health care providers so that they may continue to deliver quality care for these children.

Qiuxia Hu Welch is the Executive Director of RTC. Ms Hu Welch was born and raised in Chengdu, China and has lived in the U.S. since 1996. In that time she came to know many families with children adopted from China. The love of these families for their children and their concern for all children in Chinese orphanages touched her deeply, and eventually led her to join RTC.

"Although a lot of children in Chinese orphanages are adopted internationally or in-country," said Ms. Hu Welch, "many more are not. The children that are left behind are ones with special needs–some fairly severe. If we can provide training for orphanage caregivers, like basic physical and speech therapies, then we can change the quality of life for the children who will not find a forever home."

Ms. Hu Welch lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Augsburg College and a Master’s degree in Music from the University of Minnesota, and is an active performing musician.
